'Hofjes' (almshouses with courtyard gardens) are typical for the Low Countries and originate from the 14th century. Hofjes were built and funded by wealthy citizens for the old and needy. Pious laywomen (beguines/beginen) who lived a semi-community life and were Dutch reformed, Mennonite, Lutheran or Catholic mostly occupied the 'hofjes' in the past.
