The Dutch road system is easily accessible and extremely well-maintained. Roadways include high speed express ways, limited access motorways, dual highways and secondary roads. All roads are well signposted.

The green 'E' symbol on a map indicates international motorways, the red 'A' indicates national motorways. Small yellow signposts and the letter 'N' mark other main roads. Don't be afraid to take the backroads: this is where you'll encounter some of the nicest surprises!

Holland's infrastructure is quite good. All places are easily accessible by both private car and public transportation. All major roads in Holland have crash barriers. Many highways are treated with a special material which makes it very safe to drive, even in inclement weather.

The speed limits are as follows:

  • in built-up areas: 50 kms per hour
  • outside built-up areas: 80 kms per hour
  • on the motorways: 100-120 kms per hour, unless otherwise indicated

Toll roads

There are no toll roads in Holland. However, before entering tunnel the Dordse Kil in the Biesbosch region, you have to pay a small fee.
