National Windmill Day
1

Throughout Holland
Saturday May 13, 2006

In earlier days the windmill was often the focus of its surroundings. The position of the sails gave information on various events in the local community. Happy occasions and festive events were shown by the so-called ‘coming’ position of the sails. The miller stopped the sails just before they were going to reach their highest position.

Focus
On Saturday May 13 2006 the windmills in Holland are once more the focus of attention. The country celebrates National Windmill and Pumping Station Day. Well over 600 windmills, water mills and pumping stations throughout the country are open to the public on this day. Millers give demonstrations of their activities in and around the mill.

Blue pennant
All windmills flying the blue pennant welcome visitors. Most of the windmills do not charge an admission fee. Watch out for the blue pennants and enjoy!
