The majority of nature reserves in Holland are managed by nature organizations. These organizations are responsible for managing the reserves, large portions of which are open to visitors. There are also often signposted walking routes through these areas. Examples of such organizations are the Society for the Preservation of Nature in Holland, Dutch Forestry Commission, and the Provinciale Landschappen (Provincial Landscapes).

Society for the preservation of nature in Holland
The Society for the Preservation of Nature in Holland is a large private nature conservation organization. The society has more than 950,000 members, and owns and manages over 330 nature reserves. The society sees to the protection of such typically Dutch landscapes as lakes and marshes, forests, moors, grasslands, dunes and drift sands. The society also takes care of cultural-historical elements, such as country estates with farms and castles. Most of the nature reserves have walking routes, enabling visitors to relish the peace and quiet and open space, and simply enjoy all that nature has to offer.

Dutch Forestry Commission
The Dutch Forestry Commission is authorized by the government to manage approximately 232,000 hectares of forests and nature reserves in Holland, making it the country's largest conservator. It has been an independent organization since January 1, 1998. The Dutch Forestry Commission's mission focuses on working towards a durable living environment for people, plants and animals. Recreation in the nature reserves has been essential since the Dutch Forestry Commission was established around 100 years ago. The Dutch Forestry Commission is responsible for beautiful nature reserves, where experiencing nature is of paramount importance, and whichare characterized by peace and quiet, space and a clean environment. The nature reserves are spread across the entire country.

Provinciale Landschappen(Provincial Landscapes)
The Provinciale Landschappen are twelve private nature conservation organizations (one for every province) dedicated to the preservation, management and development of nature. The organizations are devoted not only to nature, but also to the accompanying cultural history. After all, a country estate, sheep pen or historical farm is inextricably linked to the environment in which it is found. The Provincial Landscapes together manage more than 600 nature reserves, with a total surface area of more than 87,000 hectares. The areas under the management of the Provincial Landscapes are scattered across Holland.
