Holland has a number of areas excellently suited to being discovered by bicycle. A few examples of such areas are the woods and heathland of the Hoge Veluwe, endless bicycling routes through the green province of Drenthe, and the forests near Oisterwijk in southern Holland.
Drenthe
There are bicycle routes mapped out throughout Drenthe. For those who want to plan their own route, there are handy route maps for sale. These maps (scale 1:50.000) show even the smallest paths. A true challenge is the Fietsrondje Drenthe, a bicycle route through Drenthe that is completely signposted and around 500 kilometres long. Inquire about bicycle routes and maps at the local VVV (Tourist Information Office) in the cities and villages of Drenthe.
Hoge Veluwe
The Hoge Veluwe National Park covers 5,500 hectares of forests, heaths, lakes and drift sand. It has 42 kilometres of paved bicycle paths. Two bike routes have been mapped out. Visitors to the Hoge Veluwe National Park can use one of the 1,000 'white bikes' free of charge. The bikes enable you to visit the many places of interest in the park quite easily. A number of game observation areas have been created. You may be lucky enough to see red deer, mouflons and wild boar at dusk.
Oisterwijk Forests
Cycling around Oisterwijk in North Brabant means traveling through forests and along murmuring brooks and heath landscapes. There are signposted routes with little traffic that carry you straight through the forests and heaths. The Kampina nature reserve is perhaps the loveliest part. Here you will find heather, pools and scores of unusual plants and animals. Information on this area can be obtained at the Oisterwijk Visitors Center.
