In and around Groningen there are many beautiful parks and gardens. A visit to some of the neighbouring villages is also well worth a visit.
Noorderplantsoen
Laid out in the 19th century in the so-called English landscape style, this pleasant park in the centre of Groningen still shows signs of the city fortifications.
Prinsenhof Gardens
Situated in the heart of Groningen, this secluded spot is one of the purest examples of a Renaissance garden in Holland. With its rose and herb gardens and promenade walk, it's the perfect place to take time out. The teashop, which opens in good weather, offers various refreshments, because relaxing can be thirsty work!
Grunopark
This sports and recreation complex is situated on the eastern edge of Groningen. You can get a taste of the outdoors and try the water-ski lift or even camp overnight.
Eelde
Just a bit to the South of the city is "De Buitenplaats", a museum entirely dedicated to decorative art. The collection particularly emphasises on decorative art in Holland from 1945. The building, an example of organic architecture, is certainly worth a visit! Be sure not to miss the museum garden with exotic fruit.
Next-door to the museum is the "Nijsinghhuis", a beautiful restored seventeenth-century building. Or visit the "Gebroeders Wietzes Klompenmuseum" (clog museum). As well as clogs, you can see the manufacturing process and the tools that were, and still are, used in the workshop.
Village of Roderwolde
Visit the Woldzigt oil and flourmill, which is open to the public.
