Cobra Museum Amstelveen
Wim Quist, 1994
Sandbergplein 1-3
Amstelveen

Wim Quist designs this austere, functional museum. It is located at the entrance to the Amstelveen shopping center, but opens to onto a nice park and a small artificial lake. A visit to the Cobra Museum is introduced by Karel Appel's unique fountain sculpture. Inside, one is struck by the daylight, the beautiful open spaces of the exhibition rooms and the visual presence of nature, which creates a pleasant art-oriented atmosphere.

The museum opened in 1995 as the home of the works of the CoBrA group. CoBrA is the abbreviation for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. Artists Asger Jorn (Denmark), Christian Dornemont and Joseph Noiret (Belgium), Karel Appel, Constant and Corneille (The Netherlands) founded this provocative movement in 1948. In addition to its permanent collection the museum holds temporary exhibitions on the abstract and semi abstract art of the 1950's.
