The oldest municipal museum in The Netherlands was established in 1838 and given its present name in 1899. Since 1921 the museum is housed in its current building, a renovated convent. Between 1961 and 1972 it has been enlarged by Gerrit Rietveld (with J. van Dillen) and extended with an auditorium designed by Mart van Schijndel. The museum was further enlarged and refurbished in 1999. This design (by Stephane Beel and Lieve Achtergael) is highlighted by the new staff uniforms. Fashion designers Victor & Rolf created denim suits decorated with the Utrecht crest and a belt embroidered with the name and function of each staff member. 

The main goal of the Central museum is to teach people about the city of Utrecht. Its extensive collections span over 20 centuries of history and range from archaeological finds to works of decorative and applied art. Under the wings of the museum is the famous Rietveld Schroderhuis.
