De Lijnbaan
You will forget time in the oldest shopping center in Rotterdam, De Lijnbaan. Here you will find designer shops such as Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan and many more. It is partially covered and just for pedestrians, so you can shop at your leisure without being bothered by traffic or the weather. When De Lijnbaan shopping center first opened in 1960, the covered center was a revolutionary concept for Holland and all of Europe.
Beurstraverse
The people from Rotterdam nickname this splendid shopping center the 'Buying Trench' (Koopgoot), because of its subterranean location.
The Plaza
Opposite Rotterdam's Central Station lies the Plaza, a deluxe mall with a variety of quality shops. If you leave the East exit, you will find yourself in Karel Doormanstraat. More deluxe stores and boutiques await you here brimming with elegant watches and smart tailor-made suits.
Witte de Withstraat
This street was once a notorious entertainment area dotted with dubious establishments. Nowadays it is the most artsy street in Rotterdam, with galleries, unusual restaurants and antique shops.
Nieuwe Binnenweg
Nieuwe Binnenweg is trendy and always lively and happening. This part of old Rotterdam has a wide range of second-hand shops, and furniture and music shops.
Zuidplein
Outside the city center, you will also find some impressive examples of entrepreneurial Rotterdam, such as Zuidplein Shopping Center in Zuid (south). At the time of the opening it was another record breaker, with its claim to fame that it was the largest covered shopping center in Holland.
Kop van Zuid
On the South bank you can experience a whole different way of shopping and shops. At the Vrij Entrepot Building on Kop van Zuid, you will find a diverse international selection and atmosphere. In addition to several delightful restaurants, this former warehouse complex of the customs service now accommodates a number of interesting shops. Opposite the Vrij Entrepot building a number of design and interior decorating shops are located. These are known collectively as 'Greetings from Rotterdam.'
De Oosterhof and Alexandrium
On the other side of Rotterdam, to the extreme north, you will find Oosterhof, a modern, covered shopping center that provides a perfect match with the Alexandrium. It was in the Alexandrium that the first mega-stores in the region were opened. The newest section of the Alexandrium is a hyper-modern furniture boulevard.
