Stadhuis / Muziektheater

Waterloopplein 22
Year of construction: 1986
Amsterdam had to wait for a new town hall and a new opera building for many years. Plans were made, but never realized. Towards the end of the 1970s a Viennese architect proposed to design a joint project. It was a great way to link the administration of Amsterdam with the culture of this city. After two years of fierce protests by local people a town hall-cum-music theater was indeed built. It was soon nicknamed 'Stopera'. The plans of the Viennese architect Holzbauer were combined with the design of Bijvoet and Holt for the opera building. After Bijvoet died Cees Dam completed the project.
Striking
The town hall-cum-music theater is situated in a bend of the river Amstel. The building is shaped like a huge, massive block and is a striking feature in the neighborhood. The music theater's facade is tall and made of glass. It affords panoramic views of the river Amstel, from the Skinny Bridge to the Mint Tower. The architectural highlight of the music theater is the curved front of the building, which is turned towards the city. Behind this facade the hall and the fourteen-meter-high, round foyers are located.
Awning
The town hall does not have any striking fronts. Inside, the architect has distinguished between locations for representative and non-representative purposes. All council departments that are accessible to the public may be reached via the entrance on the Amstel. A large, free-hanging awning marks this entrance.
