De Dageraad

P.L. Takstraat
Period of construction: 1920-1923
A residential complex was built north of the Amstel Canal in the 1920s. Housing Corporation De Dageraad ((The Dawn) commissioned architects M. de Klerk and P.L. Kramer to design this complex.
Amsterdam School
The architects were commissioned to build 294 houses and six stores in the area bordered by Takstraat, Tellegenstraat, Ronnerplein and Schwartzeplein. The so-called P.L. Tak quarter or 'De Dageraad' was built in accordance with the concepts of the Amsterdam School of architecture. Characteristics of the Amsterdam School are the wavy facades and details and the small windows which the architects placed rather high up in the buildings.
Project of the Century
The architects created streets that are never boring as the blocks of houses have a telescopic effect. The corners that protrude quite a bit from the facades accentuate the houses. Every detail of De Dageraad, from the windows to the chimneys, is a testimony to the Amsterdam School. Characteristics of the quarter are the orange roof tiles, the pink brickwork and the white window frames. The P.L. Tak quarter has won the Dutch 'Project of the Century Award'.
Renovation
During the 1980s the housing corporation renovated the Dageraad houses, in cooperation with the Historic Buildings Trust and Architectural firm Van Stigt. By pulling down walls and joining houses together the layout of the houses was changed considerably. The woodwork, brickwork and roofs were repaired. The renovation work was carried out in the style of the original design.
