Concertgebouw Orchestra
The Concertgebouw Orchestra was established in 1888, right after the opening of the Concertgebouw Concert Hall. Within only a few decades the orchestra became one of Europe's leading ensembles. From the beginning of the 20th century, many composers and conductors came to Amsterdam to work with this now-famous orchestra. When the orchestra celebrated its 100th birthday in 1988, it has borne the honor of the title of Royal Orchestra. Around the globe, and with a character all its own, it is universally recognized as one of the world's leading symphony orchestras.
Ricardo Chailly, the current chief conductor of the orchestra, started in 1988. Under his leadership, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has enjoyed tremendous success both in the Netherlands and abroad. The expansion of the orchestra's repertoire is still continuing.
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra consists of 120 top musicians. It goes without saying that each of them is a virtuoso on his or her instrument. Together they ensure the continuation of the specific performance character that gives this orchestra its own unique sound and flexibility. With its 'velvet' strings, the 'golden' brass sound and the exceptional timbre of the woodwinds, sometimes described as 'typically Dutch', the Concertgebouw Orchestra has won itself a special place amongst the small select group of top, world-renown orchestras. The nearly one thousand recordings that the orchestra has to its credit have also helped contribute to this well-earned reputation.
