The Netherlands Opera

De Opera was founded after World War II. The company successfully toured through the Netherlands, but mostly in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht. In 1964 the Opera changed its name to De Nederlandse Opera Stichting (The Netherlands Opera Foundation). Also, the character of the company changed: for every production a new artistic team is hired, as well as new soloists.
In 1986, a major move took place. Both the Opera and the National Ballet move to their new and current premises, The Muziektheater in Amsterdam. From then on, the company has been called De Nederlandse Opera (The Netherlands Opera). Currently, about 100 people work at De Nederlandse Opera.
Most performances take place in the Muziektheater, but the company also performs in theaters like the Stadsschouwburg and Carré. Furthermore, the Opera performs in the yearly-organized Holland Festival, as well as a free event in the Oosterpark in Amsterdam, which attracts thousands of visitors.
De Nederlandse Opera is known worldwide and has had guest performances at the Metropolitan Opera House, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Lincoln Center Festival in New York, as well as the Adelaide Festival in Australia.
De Nederlandse Opera produces about 11 productions per year, which are all equally beautiful and worthwhile seeing and enjoying. Moreover, there are weekly free lunch concerts in cooperation with the City of Amsterdam and the Holland Symfonia Orchestra.
