Chateau St. Gerlach in Houthern is located in one of the most picturesque river valleys in the hilly Limburg countryside, the Geuldal. The historic buildings house a hotel, a museum and a church. Spacious baroque gardens and extensive parkland surround the hotel and restaurant.
Eight hundred years ago the knight Gerlachus lived on his estate on the borders of the Geul river. After a dramatic incident in his life, he went on a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land. On his return he established himself again on his estate in Houthem St.Gerlach, but he lived as a hermit in a hollow oak tree. In 1201, in honor of St.Gerlachus, a monastery was founded on the site of his grave. The monastery became a popular place of pilgrimage and in the course of centuries many miracles were believed to take place here.
The hotel is located in the old tenant farm and has 58 individually decorated rooms and suites. The Garden Pavilion has a view over the kitchen garden and the Ingendael nature reserve. The hotel has a lounge with an open fire, a conference room and an attractive bar. There are lots of leisure options for guests at Chateau St.Gerlach, including cultural and historical guided tours, and walks and bicycle trips in the countryside. On the estate itself, you will find a superb Roman swimming pool and sauna with a Turkish steam bath. There is also a Kneipp Cure Centre.
