Museum 'Het Prinsenhof' Delft

The Building
The former convent of St. Agatha was founded towards the end of the 14th century. From 1573, it was the residence of William of Orange (1533-1584). It was also the scene of his assassination.
Later, the building became the center for the Delft cloth trade. Today it is occupied by a museum, Stedelijk Museum Het Prinsenhof, mainly dedicated to the Eighty Years War (1568-1648) between the Netherlands and Spain. William I of Orange was murdered on the stairs on July 10, 1584 and the marks of the bullets can still be seen on the walls.
The Collection
The museum houses Delft's municipal art collection and an exhibition on the House of Orange-Nassau, as well as portraits of the famous lawyer and scholar Hugo Grotius and his family, antique Delftware, tapestries, silver items and paintings by artists from Delft.
In the passage approaching the Soup Kitchen and the Historical Hall, you will find the trunk in which the scholar Hugo Grotius, with his wife's help, escaped from Loevestein Castle. Grotius had been sentenced to life imprisonment because of his moderate stand in the political-religious disputes of 1612-1618. Grotius was famous for his daring escape from the castle of Loevestein in March of 1621. He fled to France, rwhere the king hailed him as 'the miracle of Holland'.
