De Twee Cheetahs
Plantage Kerklaan 96
Year of construction: 1999

East of downtown Amsterdam lies the 19th-century Artis Amsterdam Zoo. The zoo's African Savannah boasts the eye-catching restaurant 'De Twee Cheetahs' (The Two Cheetahs). The Amsterdam architectural firm Onno Vlaanderen designed the restaurant. From the restaurant, with its outdoor area, you look out on zebras, wildebeest and the play island on one side. On the other side you see various historical warehouses across the water.

Brick pattern
Towards the end of the 1980s Artis underwent a facelift and was expanded. A small strip of land along the Entrepot Dock was added to the zoo. The tall, elongated glass restaurant 'De Twee Cheetahs' is situated on this strip of land. The restaurant has a number of floors on different levels, linked by staircases. Mainly untreated natural materials were used, both inside and outside. A brick pattern, incorporating seven brick sizes, was created especially for this building. The restaurant is open daily to the visitors of Artis Amsterdam Zoo.
