Beurs van Berlage
Damrak 277
Period of construction: 1898-1903

The Beurs van Berlage is considered Holland's most important 19th-century architectural monument. The imposing building is an eye-catching feature in Amsterdam's cityscape. Coming from the direction of Amsterdam Central Station you will soon see the elongated building with its orange bricks on your right.

World-famous
The Beurs van Berlage was built between 1898 and 1903. It was the first major assignment for Hendrik Petrus Berlage, a previously unknown architect. This design made him world-famous. The building had to be constructed on a reclaimed part of the river Amstel, where the trading ships used to berth. The building had to house several types of stock exchange businesses. The Beurs van Berlage accommodated the stock market, goods, grain, currency and ship cargo exchanges for many years.

Amsterdam heroes
The three corners of the Beurs van Berlage feature three Amsterdam heroes. Gijsbrecht van Aemstel, legendary founder of the city of Amsterdam, stands on the Beursplein corner. The right corner features the 17th-century admiral and conqueror Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Hugo de Goot, the famous lawyer, symbolizes the import of Amsterdam on the left-hand corner. Well-known Dutch artist Jan Toorop designed various tile tableaus in the Beurs van Berlage. The former entrance hall boasts symbolic illustrations of the past, present and future.

Beurs van Berlage Museum
Exactly 100 years after the first stone was laid, the Beurs van Berlage Museum opened its doors. A part of the exchange building is now open to the public. The museum is a fount of information on the history of the Beurs van Berlage.
