Entrepotdok

Entrepotdok
Year of construction: 1829
Do you think it is impossible to walk from Amsterdam to Zutphen via Belgium in just five minutes? It is quite possible in Amsterdam and you do not even have to be super fit. You can complete this feat in the Entrepotdok. These warehouses are located between the Netherlands Maritime Museum and Artis Zoo.
Monumental warehouses
Construction on this impressive warehouse complex started in the beginning of the 18th century. It was finished in 1829. Goods coming from exotic countries were stored here until the required excise duties had been paid. The Entrepotdok comprises 84 monumental warehouses, named after Dutch and Belgian cities. The names of these cities are still shown on plaques on the fronts of the buildings.
Hustle and bustle
Architectural firm Van Stigt managed to preserve the warehouses by giving them a new purpose. After recent restoration and renovation work the Entrepotdok now houses 600 houses. It is the largest converted warehouse complex in Amsterdam. Small companies have set up business in the basement. Shops and community centers have opened in the side streets. The hustle and bustle, so characteristic of the area two centuries ago, has returned. This very successful project has met with much international acclaim.
