Import and export regulations

Duty-free shopping for travellers within the European Union was abolished in 1999, but See Buy Fly at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol still offers this benefit. As a result, you can still go shopping and benefit from duty-free prices before your departure - irrespective of your destination! The only exception applies to alcohol and tobacco. If you fly to a destination within the European Union (and don't travel on to a country outside the European Union within the next 24 hours), you will still have to pay the tax and duties on alcohol and tobacco (at the regular retail rates).

In short: all flying passengers, irrespective of their destination, can buy items at See Buy Fly at prices that would apply if they flew to destinations outside the European Union (with the exception of alcohol and tobacco products).

The following countries are Member States of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus (Greek part), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. An exception applies to the Channel Islands and the Canary Islands: if you fly to these destinations, you also buy alcohol and tobacco products duty free.

Note that if you return to the Netherlands from a country outside the European Union, you will always be subject to the rules that apply to the import of goods from non-EU countries (only part of which is duty-free). This means that you should be aware of the import regulations that apply in the country of destination, also when you return to the Netherlands.

VAT refund

Non-EU residents that have purchased goods in Europe and are entitled to a VAT refund, can have their VAT paid out in cash at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. VAT cheques of the Global Refund organisation can be cashed at one of the branches of ABN AMRO Bank and GWK. Cheques issued by the Cashback and Easy Tax Free organisations can be cashed at the desk of the Communication Centre in Lounge Central.
To qualify for a VAT refund the following points are important:

  • BEFORE passing passport control, the purchases, receipts, relevant VAT cheque(s) and passport have to be shown at the customs office that is located in Departures 3. It is important therefore that you do not check in the goods that you have purchased before going to the customs office!
  • Customs officers will check the documents and goods and then stamp the VAT cheque.
  • The completely filled in and stamped cheque can then be cashed at one of the branches of ABN AMRO Bank and GWK (Global Refund) or at the Communication Centre in Lounge Central (Easy Tax Free, VATfree.nl and Cashback).
