Theater Museum
The highlight of the collection of the Netherlands Theater Museum is a miniature theater dating from 1781. This chamber theater is the only remaining one in Europe.

Private entertainment
The chamber theater was commissioned by Hieronymus Baron Van Slingelandt in the 18th century. This immensely rich baron wanted it to privately entertain his guests. No actors played in this theater, however. Technical effects only were used. The baron's guests must have been absolutely thrilled. The entertainment consisted of a rapid succession of sets. The set representing a room in a palace would magically change into a wood. The highlights of the show were the theater effects, which included a rolling sea and a waterfall.

Spectacular set changes
The miniature theater comprises fourteen complete sets from the 18th and 19th centuries. These are models of the sets of the Stadsschouwburg Theater on Leidseplein square in Amsterdam. The sets of the chamber theater are changed by way of an authentic 18th-century wooden mechanism under the stage floor. Today, visitors can still enjoy a performance, thanks to contemporary video technology. The video highlights the ingenious theater techniques from those days. Spectacular set changes show a turbulent storm-tossed sea and cherubs descending from heaven.

The Netherlands Theater Museum is located in two canal houses with stunning 18th-century interiors.
