Much of Holland is water. Few countries have such an extensive system of rivers, canals, lakes and sea inlets. Holland has 4,400 kilometres of navigable waterway, so it is a paradise for watersports enthusiasts. There is no other country in the world where it is so easy to travel by boat from the centre of town into the heart of the countryside, and where you can experience such a unique combination of urban bustle and rural quiet.

On the water
Have a great time on the water. Stay at a hotel near the water or on a historic ship or book a room in a lighthouse. Have a drink at a pavement café, and watch the boats go by. Or discover Holland by boat. Explore the inland waters of Friesland, the Delta, and the lakes of Utrecht and North and South Holland. If you do not have a boat of your own, you can easily hire one.

Wetlands, meadow birds and waders
Holland also has extensive wetlands, may of them internationally renowned, like the Weerribben in North West Overijssel and the Biesbosch between South Holland and North Brabant. Holland is home to many of the less common meadow birds and waders, including half the European population of black-tailed godwits.

Transport by water
Many towns and village owe their origins to their location near the water. In the past, transport by water was very important for trade, fisheries and goods transhipments. Many of the old trading posts along the IJsselmeer and in Friesland and Zeeland are well worth a visit.

Special events to bring the past back to life
Special events are also organised to bring the past back to life. Like harbour festivals, and the Vlaggetjesdagen and Haringdagen, celebrating the first catch of herring after the winter. Holland also has many permanent attractions with water playing the leading role. They include Cape Holland in Den Helder, the Dolfinarium in Harderwijk and the Netherlands Water Museum in Arnhem.
