Kunsthal Rotterdam
September 26, 2009 to January 17, 2010
This fall, the Kunsthal Rotterdam will mount a major exhibition on American paintings from the early 1900s. After well over twenty years, works by Edward Hopper (1882-1967) will be on view in Holland once again.
Kunsthal Rotterdam shows eight top works by Hopper in the context of his time, together with paintings by famous artists, such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Sheeler and Grant Wood, and with photographs by Alfred Stieglitz. The ninety plus paintings in this exposition, on display in the museum’s spacious daylight gallery, include works on paper, sculptures and photos. Jointly, they tell an impressive story of the developments in contemporary American art.
The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York manages the main collections of twentieth- century American art. It owns the most extensive collection of works by Edward Hopper in the world. The ‘Modern Life, Edward Hopper and His Time’ exhibition is a prestigious joint project by the two museums.
