From 25 September 2008 to 1 February 2009, the Zuiderzee Museum will display a selection of ‘treasures’ from the treasure chest of the Zuiderzee Museum, the repository. The exhibition, entitled Schatten van de Zuiderzee (Treasures of the Zuiderzee) will be displayed in a special thematic setting.

The Dutch Zuiderzee Museum, located in Enkhuizen, is the proud owner of a collection comprising no fewer than 24,000 items. Most of these never – or only very rarely – leave the repository. The Museum has now made a selection of the most extraordinary items in this Zuiderzee collection, and has subdivided these according to a particular theme, such as Schatten rondom de Zuiderzee (Treasures around the Zuiderzee), Bruine vloot schatten (Treasures from the Charter Ships) and Huishoudschatten (Household Treasures). Along with previously displayed masterpieces, the exhibition will show various objects, including picture postcards, paintings, tile tableaux, ship models, furniture, sleighs and silverwork, as well as several objects that have only been revealed to the public on very sporadic occasions.

The room bearing the title Schatten van mannen (Men Worth Treasuring) displays five of the seven new acquisitions from the Francisco van Benthum fashion studio. The outfits come from the winter collection 2008-2009, entitled HOPE, for which traditional costumes from the Province of Noord-Holland formed the source of inspiration. In the same room, these fashion items are supplemented by accessories for men and (paintings about) traditional male costume from the Museum’s own collection. The other two pieces from the Francisco van Benthum collection will be on show during the Gone with the Wind exhibition that will run from 22 March to 22 November 2009.
