I almost want to keep this one a secret, but I've found an incredibly beautiful B&B in the idyllic countryside of northeastern Holland, thanks to my tried and true travel guide, Here's Holland. (I personally think this is the best guidebook on the market -- loaded with all the details you need for your Dutch adventure, and written by three American and British residents who seem to know the country inside and out. PLUS it gives you the lowdown on the Dutch culture. What more do you need? Check out www.heresholland.com.)
Anyhow, the name of this piece of heaven is 't Olde Hof, and it's located in the province of Drenthe, one of the prettiest parts of Holland, an area also known for its gorgeous biking routes, and 'hunebedden' -- mysterious granite boulder formations that are actually older than Stonehenge! (See Here's Holland under 'Borger'.) Located in Westervelde, near the town of Assen, this B&B offers luxurious rooms either in the sprawling, typical Dutch farmhouse from 1860, or in a private, separate cottage, the 'Achterhuis', that easily sleeps five and possibly six -- with two floors, a newly remodeled kitchen and top-of-the-line bathroom, front deck (with barbecue grill) facing the pool and tennis courts, AND, this is the best part, your own private sauna! So what are you waiting for? The cottage is completely stocked with everything you'll need, from games to books, CD/DVD player, coffee maker, and on and on. Believe me, owner Dirkje Heida will coddle you here, bringing breakfast in the morning at your choice of time. Bikes are also available at the B&B, so, be sure to ask Dirkje for a recommended route.
And if you fancy something even more romantic, there's also a thatched-roof honeymoon gazebo, the 'Venhuis', complete with fireplace and outdoor hot tub, and situated along the water of a fen, with your own pier! Perfect for honeymooners! (Just so you know, the shower and toilet for the Venhuis guests-only are separate from the gazebo, in a sort of out-building, but all is first class. All other accomodations here have state-of-the-art private baths en suite.)
Biking, boating, fishing, swimming and tennis are all here, with free parking to boot -- AND babysitting! It just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it? A few nights here, and you may never want to go home. But, you must book a good bit ahead for this place, so get busy. This one's a gem. Very reasonably priced on a stunning property. (No credit cards accepted, but definitely worth a trip to the bank.)
