Street furniture from 1915-1930 in the garden of Museum Het Schip

From March 20, 2008 the lunchroom of the Museum Het Schip will open its garden and display a unique collection of Amsterdam School style street furniture from the period of 1915 to 1930. Showpieces include municipal mail boxes, a rubbish bin, smoke detector and electricity box. There are also several street lanterns and a bridge railing designed by architect Piet Kramer. The exhibition highlights the form and function of street furniture from this period, as well as the unique role of the Municipal Public Works department which ensured street furniture complied with the architecture style during that time. The street furniture on display here was found by chance under an Amsterdam bridge and acquired by the museum. The garden is off the lunchroom of the Museum Het Schip, and is a great spot to sit out in nice weather. In addition to coffee, tea and soft drinks the lunchroom offers a soup of the day and various sandwiches. Museum visitors receive a 50% discount on coffee or tea.
