Dutch River Ferries

The river ferry is our oldest public, environmentally-friendly* mode of transport and a lasting symbol of the slow pace of life as it used to be. In centuries gone by Holland, never short of open water, boasted thousands of ferries, though today there remain but a couple of hundred. Holland Heritage® will be releasing a unique DVD that, for the first time ever, will bring 150 typical Dutch river ferries from throughout the provinces to life.  Every year the ferries make some 38 million crossings, 1.2 million of which are for tourists, be they weekend ones or holidaymakers.

Holland Heritage® takes you on a certainly unusual and interesting journey where you’ll come across 150 of the nicest ferries in our provinces. ‘Pontje Doen', loosely translated as ‘taking the ferry’ is a series celebrating everything that is so typically Dutch, that instils the urge to travel in you and that takes you back to yesteryear, to places where you’ll still find peace, romance and geniality. Using the simple menu on the DVD, you can spring from one province to another at random to look for your favourite ferries.
