Oudenbosch, Noord-Brabant
Although the original is several times larger, the ‘St. Peters of the Low Countries’ is also quite an impressive sight. With a length of 81 metres and a height of 63 metres, this Basilica in the village of Oudenbosch is one of the most prominent churches in Holland.
Work of art by Cuypers
In 1867 one of the most famous Dutch architects, Pierre Cuypers, was commissioned by the parish priest, Hellemons, to design a new church for Oudenbosch. Cuypers travelled to Rome to find inspiration. He found it in two churches: the St. Peters and the St. John Lateran can clearly be recognised in his neoclassic basilica in Brabant. The funny thing is, Cuypers had always loathed neoclassicism as an architectural style…
144 steps
Not only is the outside of the basilica incredibly beautiful, the inside is equally as impressive. Of particular interest is the organ, which dates back to 1772, and the paintings on the large dome. If you do not mind a little climb, take the 144 steps to enjoy a fantastic view above and below of the entire basilica from 28 metres above ground.
