The Scheringa Museum: 'The Magic of Willink'

The Scheringa Museum of Realist Art is an initiative by art-collectors Dirk and Baukje Scheringa. In 1988 they purchased their first painting by Carel Willink. It was the magic of this artist that blossomed into a passion for art. The museum now houses the largest collection of Willink. The exhibition entitled, ‘The Magic of Willink’ comprises works from the museums collection as well as pieces on loan from private collectors or museums. A unique component of this exhibition is the collection of the artists’ photographs. Images include the streets of Amsterdam, the sculpture garden of the Rijksmuseum, the artists’ atelier and various travels. Willink compiled these photographs with images from the newspaper to create studies for his works of ‘magic realism’. In addition to artworks and photographs, the exhibition illustrates the artists’ life and works in fragments of letters, documentaries and film material.
