Volendam 2007

Volendam:

Well everyone, we wanted to get this trip in before the end of the summer vacation, Volendam which is in the northern part of holland is very picturesque. We got up early today and traveled to just north of Amsterdam. We came here to see what was around, and take a ferry over to Marken, as a good friend of Ina's had family there... well sort of.. only the name was in common. So Marken... we'll send ya the bill later..lol and the old woman that owns the gift shop on Marken .. well does sort of look like you and could be a close relative..if you seen her.. she has the genuine look of one of those shriveled up apple face dolls... just kidding my friend.

As we traveled there I had noticed we had drove past a spot were on my very first trip to Holland, I had gotten lost and had noticed this bicycle on the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere and always wondered who would leave it there and why was it left there just leaning on a fence. This where my fascination for the bicycles in Holland started.

Still puzzels me today, however the bike has long since been removed as evedienced as we past there today. This was the point back then.. that I turned around and headed for the best thing that was to happen to me in my life little did I know. So this little bike has been a fond memory. And soon after the image was given a name for a very special relative. As we drove past this point Ina and chatted about those events back then and chuckled as we reminiced and continued our journey to Volendam and Marken.

As we drove into town of Volendam early this morning and looked for a place to park close to the docks we pulled into this place and an older and very kind and cheerful gentleman with an aged face directed us to nice parking spot and stated that he had been working this parking lot for 50 years. He greatfully gave us some information as to what to see while we were here and where to eat as well places of special interest.

We wondered around for a bit and decided to get a koffie and plan where we would start out first, just prior to attending a few shops along the way. We took a few images as we strolled what is now the lakeside docks at one point many years ago this place was open to the sea but since they placed one of the largest dykes in the world close to here it's now become a vast lake "closed off" to the North Sea.

We finally decided to sit down at this little cafe' called DeMolen Grand Cafe' and share a smoke, drink a koffie, watch as people walked by and take in the scenery of this beautiful little fishing town.

No wonder that a famous singer sang the praise of this characteristic Dutch fishing village in the words: "Anyone who wants to see the real beauty of Holland, goes to Volendam". As a result of its completely insulated location north of Amsterdam, this beautiful little fishing and tourist village has preserved its character for over six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the local fishermen. The characteristic and charming small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, presenting the visitor with an atmosphere of geniality and romance.

After a brief walk around and a little bite to eat we headed for the dock directly to catch a ferry over to the little island town of Marken, which is now bridged to the main land. We could have driven there but we wanted to take the ferry over.

It was a short 15 minute boat ride to the little Island Town of Marken.

Marken:

As we got off the ferry, I noticed this boat tied to the docks and the name on it was "Escape Marken" we both had a good laugh as Ina's friend Marken should get a chuckle out of that one.

We know Marken can appreciate that..lol . So we proceeded to walk up to the gift shops right beside the dock in Marken and tour around all the little back streets and see all the nice little houses on Marken.

We we were going to send this card to Marken.. from a Marken gift shop.. but we forgot to pick it up before we left to return. So Marken this is what your post card would have looked like.
So we then headed off to the back roads.

checking out an old farm tractor.

As well, to look for the lighthouse on Marken which was about 3 and half kilometers away, one way uphill etc etc... seriously it was a brisk walk in some very beautiful scenery.

As we got to the light house, we proceeded to enter through the gate on the path that leads to light house.. but we were turned away by some man tending the place. Well we looked at each other and grinned.

We had just walked all that way out there to be turned away... we had to laugh.. So we sat out at front the gates of the light house had a smoke and spoke to a young couple on bicyles visiting as well. Funny enough a fellow Canadian from Toronto too !. whats are the odds of that happening.. hahha.

So we headed back to town and took a quick look around the gift shops at the docks again for a more indepth look and then we boarded the boat back to Volendam. I know we both had a good time walking around this small little island and we saw a lot of beauty and things here and you really have just got to experience this place for yourself.

After our brief boat ride back we decided to look around some more of the shops, grab a snack and a quick smoke and pick up our picture that we had taken earlier in the day here in Volendam dressed up in traditional garb from an earlier years gone by.

The infamous "Hotel Spaander"

Hotel Spaander's unique location in the historic centre of Volendam, you have easy access in all directions. Just a short walk away you can have your picture taken in traditional Volendam costume,

or take a trip by boat to the historic island of Marken or go shopping on Volendam's famous dike. There are also the historic small towns of Monnickendam and Edam that are nearby.

As a visitor to Volendam you are only 20 km. from Amsterdam and 30 km. from Schiphol Airport. This pretty much concluded our day and we then headed home to dinner a glass of wine.

Thankyou and we hope you enjoyed following us along today.

Have a great day !
