The Amsterdam Underground Festival discloses historic and new underground locations in Amsterdam during a few days a year for the cultural highlight of the season. Exclusively and for the first time. The underground spaces provide a stage for upcoming talent as well as innovative, experimental productions—all inspired by underground Amsterdam.
The Amsterdam Underground Festival brings together several disciplines (dance, music, theatre, film, visual art, historic tours, debates, publications, education, fashion). It also matches the young and fresh with well known and renowned art makers, creating interesting combinations.
The Amsterdam Underground Festival is opening up some very special locations: a bridge cellar, a work-in-progress subway platform of the (in)famous North-Southline which is currently being constructed, the tunnel underneath the IJtunnel that connects the North and South of Amsterdam, and a few smaller spaces—all centred around Central Station. In the programme you will find classical and pop music, modern and classic dance, theatre, art, and much more. All performances and artworks are underground (beneath the surface of the ground), underground (existing outside the establishment and reflecting experimental, avant-garde views) and are in one way or another connected to the underground theme (its associations (life, death), emotional connotations (anxiety, safety), and its history as well as its future). The definitive programme will be announced on the website by August 1st, 2007.
So…Most of all, Amsterdam Underground Festival is literally and figuratively the search for what lives underneath Amsterdam. Its first edition in September of 2006 was a great success, and Amsterdam Underground Festival is working on establishing itself as a metropolitan, international event. Since the underground is so important to a city where there is no space left above ground, there are many more locations to explore and more art to be created.
