(Portraits of) Young American is the latest photography project by photographer and fashion designer Hedi Slimane. Slimane has made portraits of various creative people in the New York art scene in an attempt to record today’s generation of artists. Young American includes portraits of Dan Colen, Gardar Eide Einarsson, Ryan McGinley, Terence Koh, Nate Lowman, Dash Snow and Banks Violette.
Hedi Slimane has been part of the worldwide creative community of artists, filmmakers and pop musicians for many years. He studied art history at Ecole du Louvre and worked as a designer for Yves Saint Laurent (1996-2000) and Christian Dior (2000-2007). Slimane photographs, designs furniture, is involved in architecture and graphic design, and makes installations. He shot to prominence with a series of publications: ‘Berlin’, ‘Stage’, and ‘London – Birth of a Cult’. Characteristic of Slimane’s minimalist black-and-white photos is the way they reflect his obsession with music, especially the recent new rock wave movement. He has exhibited in New York, Berlin, Paris and Zurich.
Young American can be seen from 15 July to 12 September 2007 in Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. Open daily 10.00-18.00, Thurs/Fri 10.00-21.00. Tickets: € 7.00 / info: +31 (0)20 5516500 / www.foam.nl
