barrel organs
Without contributing to culture shock, barrel organs will remind you that you’ve landed in a new country
while putting a smile on your face. The large, ornately carved automatic organs are typically found in the busiest shopping streets on a Saturday afternoon when their owners can hope to ply a few coins out of the hands of passersbys. They work like player pianos, and the music they play - at invariably ear-splitting volume - ranges from rock classics, to silly-standards, and surprisingly current chart topping hits. And yes, they do take requests…just remember to drop a coin in the rattling tin cup.
