The IJ separates downtown Amsterdam and Amsterdam-North. This is the oldest part of the Amsterdam harbor. It is a cove of the former Zuyderzee, now the IJsselmeer lake. You can cross the IJ free of charge by ferry.
Destination Amsterdam-North
The 'Buiksloterweg Ferry' departs from jetty 7 at Central Station for Buiksloterweg in Amsterdam-North. Granted, this straightforward passage is not very adventurous. However, the ferry affords stunning views of the water, the boats and the IJ shores. Also, it will be worth your while to actually go ashore in Amsterdam-North. You can take a walk across the sluice of the North-Holland canal. Stop to visit cafe-restaurant 'Het Tolhuis' at 7 Buiksloterweg. This monumental building which dates from 1859 is worth the detour.
A smaller ferry departs from jetty 8 for Amsterdam-North. This ferry takes passengers to IJplein square.
Destination Java Island
The 'Java Ferry' travels to the north of the Java Island from jetty 8. Java Island is one of the 'new' islands in the Oostelijke Haven area. In a short period of time this area has developed into a must-see attraction for people who like eye-catching, modern architecture. The ferry takes you to the north of Java Island in approximately 10 minutes. From here you can also go to KNSM Island, Sporenburg and Borneo Island.
Good to know: you may take your bicycle on these ferries.
