Modecentrum/ Fashion Center Almere

Modecentrum Almere
When you enter Almere you immediately see the Modecentrum (Fashion Center), a prominent landmark. Architect Hans Kuiper developed a functional and stark, high-tech building. The first stage, a spacey-looking round building, has been completed. In the second and third stages a square and a triangular building will be constructed, respectively. The three buildings and the parking garage will be situated on a green cone. Glass overhead bridges will link the buildings. Kuiper opted for an unadorned design, as this fits in well with the relatively empty, green surroundings.
Rode Donders (1998)
Liesbeth van de Pol designs buildings with strong characters; buildings which 'have nothing to be ashamed of'. In relation to the human environment buildings have to, preferably, add something unique. The imposing 'Rode Donders' on the outskirts of Almere certainly meet this criterion. These buildings look more like grain silos of yesteryear than like the condominiums that they are. Covered in red they rise high above the green landscape.
Museum De Paviljoens
The silver-colored De Paviljoens (The Pavilions) are located within walking distance of Almere Centrum railway station. Belgian architects Hilde Daem and Paul Robbrecht designed these buildings. Museum De Paviljoens presents changing exhibitions on contemporary art, design and architecture.
Podium Almere (1999)
The mobile podium towers above the Almere market square like a giant gantry crane. Superb features are the stars in the roof, the contrasting colors in which it has been painted and various other details. Michael van Gessel and Jerry van Eyk are the architects of Podium Almere.
De Verbeelding Art Landscape Nature
De Verbeelding (The Image) is an international arts center, designed by R. van Zuuk Almere. Pavilion De Verbeelding is a welcome change in landscape park De Wetering.
Information Center Stadshart Almere
Because the city of Almere is developing fast, the center also needs to expand. Famous Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas designed the new Stadscentrum (City Center). Unique feature in his design is the 'arched ground level'. This floor, which gradually slopes up and down which will be constructed across the current ground level. All traffic will go through the 'Nether World' down below, with a pedestrian area with shops and houses in the 'Upper World'. Various renowned architects jointly work on this project, including Christian de Portzamparc, David Chipperfield, Meyer en Van Schooten. You can see a film, scale models and an exhibition on this project in the information center. Tours are conducted for groups, by appointment.
Almere City Hall (1988)
One of the features of this building is the use of contrasting materials. Decorative gold leaf planes contrast sharply with the tarnished concrete. The transparent wall of the council chamber symbolizes the city's openness to its citizens. The architect is Cees Dam of Cees Dam en Partners Architecten.
Library Zeewolde (1989)
The design of this library is unique in the use of many slanting planes and walls and the small windows in natural colors and materials. The details make this design a very special one. The building's architect Koen van Velsen won the BNA Kubus in 2002.
Eye-catching building: Nieuw Land Erfgoedcentrum
Architectural Firm Pro from The Hague designed the new Nieuw Land Erfgoedcentrum (New Land Heritage Center). The design is based on the Nieuw Land Polder Museum which Benthem Crouwel Architecten designed in 1993. The new design promises to be quite magnificent.
Visitor's Center Oostvaardersplassen
The design for the new visitor's center has already been decided on. From the entries for a design competition the submission by MVRDV from Rotterdam was chosen as the best one. MVRDV is known for its contemporary architectural design. The balance between nature and contemporary architecture is important in the design.
Architecture Center CASLa
Jean-Philippe Lanoire and Sophie Courrian designed the building which will house Architecture Center CASLa. The building is expected to be ready in 2006.
